I've had this book now for several months and I seriously pick it up at least once or twice a day. Yes, I am a professional aromatherapist and a registered nurse, but neither of these are necessary or required to find this huge book of information helpful and necessary. You absolutely DO NOT have to be even well versed in essential oils to NEED this book. If you use any essential oil for any reason - you need this book. If you don't understand some of the chemical constituent information, then take time to learn it - it isn't difficult and the author makes it really very easy. Is it an absolute necessity for anyone who sells, uses or advocates the use of essential oils - YES!! It is easily segmented into even just a particular essential oil and you can quickly see if there are cautions for pregnancy or any other health issue. It astounds me that so much research, documentation and time had to go into accumulating all of this information and the price of the book is very under priced in my opinion when I consider so many of the healthcare texts and college texts that give a smidgen of the information in this one book. Yes, it is big and yes it is heavy and yes it is worth every single cent you might spend on it.Robert Tisserand is THE single most respected authority for so many things pertaining to aromatherapy and essential oils but particularly when it is a question of safety. He has been studying, researching and writing about this subject for very many years. This book sits beside my desk - and I have many aromatherapy books that aren't in this revered spot - so I can easily reach over and check, double check everything whether I am making up a blend, writing a blog, commenting on a social media site or just curious - the answers are always (yes, always) there and easily found. He has given the world of aromatherapy what no one else could - legitimacy and safety. I for one will be forever grateful.

I ordered this book as a supplement guide for my aromatherapy course. It's very informative and extremely useful in learning essential oils safety. It discusses the chemical components of each oil, benefits and uses. The pictures in the book are not in color. This is a big textbook and heavy to carry around. I have the Kindle version on my phone for quick and easy reference wherever I go. The hardcover textbook is good to use at home as a desk reference. It's always good to know how to safely use essential oils effectively, and this book teaches the best way to do so. Delivery took about a week and it was packaged well. The book is expensive, but textbooks usually are. It's definitely worth the price.
I bought this book based on great reviews online. Somehow, I missed the reviews stating that a lot of the books content is based on animal testing. Cats livers don't even process essential oils the same way we do. Really? Why is it important that we put essential oils in rabbits eyes to come to the conclusion that it might not be a good idea for the rest of us to do the same? If animal tests on every oil don't bother you, then this is probably a great book ... but I kind of found it disgusting.
What is being promoted by distributors of some brands is irresponsible. If you are using essential oils more than occasionally in very small quantities, you need this book. These have effects in the body. Just because they are natural does not mean we should promote wanton uneducated use of them. The long term effects of what people are doing are not known. What is helpful is this book points out potential effects and known potency where there have been effects and side effects in animal studies. Very thorough review that is not based on a brands own internal research. Most oils have not been extensively tested on humans and the amount and quantity and disregard for interactions that some of these members of companies are encouraging directly or indirectly is disconcerting to say the least. My hope is that the industry self corrects and people reach a new level of maturity. This book is a step in that direction. Bravo. My statements have nothing to do with "purity" claims.
Essentially, the whole book is a giant, science-based warning.The book, in a nutshell, tells you how harmful an essential oil can be if taken orally or applied topically beyond certain recommended doses. The book, however, doesn't tell you how to use an essential oil medicinally or how an essential oil could be used medicinally. One thing the book does not have that I wish it had was research on the inhalation of essential oils via steam, a diffuser, or other. It only discusses oral intake and topical application.I do not agree with reviewers who have taken away review stars because the book does not fully discuss the medicinal uses of essential oils. The book is titled "Essential Oil Safety", not "Essential Oil: Applications and Uses". In the introduction, however, the book does cite research papers that have reviewed the pharmaco-therapeutic potential of essential oils. So if a reader is interested in the medicinal uses of essential oils they may read those papers.The book alludes to numerous studies and even cautions when studies are inconsistent, limited, need more research, or when doses should be reevaluated and revised. The scientific citations alone are worth the book's price since one can then explore the literature related to an essential oil of interest. This scientific approach to essential oils is a breath of fresh air when compared to the multitude of dangerous essential oil bloggers that think they know what they are doing.
